On September 8, 2017, Flying Solo hosted it's second epic fashion show during New York Fashion Week, featuring top independent designer brands in womenswear, menswear, and accessories from around the world. NOT showcased it's see-now, buy-now Fall/Winter 2017 Collection, that is available at Flying Solo starting now!
In a whirlwind week, we cast over 40 models, fit over 350 looks, and transformed our 7000 sq foot flagship into a backstage and runway. The incredible Coco & Breezy (from our very own Coco & Breezy sunglasses brand) DJ-ed our event, whipping up our energy all the way from the early morning model call at 7:00 AM, and we had incredible sponsors that made it all happen: Ecru New York, Emilie Heathe, BK Style Foundation, Sailor Jerry. Also thank you to our show's resident stylist Veronika Belyaeva and to J.J. Gray for their amazing knee-high boots.
Another amazing highlight we had was a collaboration with Svrround VR who live streamed our show in 3D! Although I was stuck down in the "basement" backstage, I got to watch the show through the monitors tracking our 3D cameras downstairs!
NOT's Fall collection came from an exploration of reversibility. The main materials I was fascinated by this season were the thick polar fleeces and terry fabrics that are usually used as linings and backing, and not used on the exteriors of garments. The fabrics I used all had unique tactile quality on both sides of the fabric, and it was used on designs that flipped them back and forth in a way that the inner and outer garment felt intertwined. Another amazing fabric I used was this multicolor yarn knit fleece made in Japan. It's made from a traditional knitting machine dating back to 1906 that knits very slowly and gently, creating an exquisitely soft hand.
Visit Flying Solo on 434 West Broadway, our Manhattan studio, or online shop to try on these pieces in person!
